Rock on! That’s truly awesome. I can’t think of a better movie premiere to actually be invited to this year. The company I kept was a bit less extraordinary. I don’t understand why people bring 4 year olds to cerebral sci-fi movies at 10:20pm. Anyway…
I purposely avoided reading your review and just looked at the final verdict you gave the film. I decided to go in as cold as possible, barely even knowing the film’s premise.
Coincidentally, your review of the film paralleled my own as I left the theater. You’re right about the forced feeling of some of the initial set up. I think I would have begun to really hate the first act had it not been for the languid tone that couldn’t help but entrance. I actually watched as almost a third of the audience walked out before the first 20 minutes had passed.
Possible Spoiler
I was pleased to watch the film sprout from being a simple enduring love tale to an enduring humanity tale (of sorts). Jackman’s character, eternally personifying the anguish and anger toward mortality, juxtaposed with the ever halcyon Weisz. It took him struggling and suffering till the climax of the film to finally turn and see the solution face to face.
The movie is allegorical, which is why many people hate it. It’s the reason I am still willing to go to films, though. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie this good, and as some of the flaws of the film fade from my memory, the themes continue to resonate, telling me this is probably the best film I’ve seen this year.
Wow, I just realized I wrote my own mini-review, though all it really does is echo yours. That wasn’t really my intention, but I guess with the fact that I don’t have my own blog, yours took the brunt of my need to write something about this great film.
and I inadvertently opened the comment box for the Robert Altman post. I got a D in “inarnets”
