Bring me the head of Alberto Gonzales.

As Dubya bequeaths another “heck of a job” upon his embattled attorney general, it comes to light that Alberto Gonzales apparently lied about his conducting meetings concerning the firing of federal prosecutors. Said Sen. Chuck Schumer of the revelations: “If the facts bear out that Attorney General Gonzales knew much more about the plan than he has previously admitted, then he can no longer serve as attorney general.Update: “He has said some things that just don’t add up.Republican Senators start to pile on, among them Hagel, Graham, and Specter.

  1. Have you heard the echoes about all 93 attorneys fired under clinton and reno in 1993? It is on the right-wing news cycles. What are the distinctions between the firnings? Am I missing something? Can anyone make sense of this? Are political firings par for the course, or not?

  2. Hey steve…sorry about the response lag. Obviously, I’ve been away from my blog-desk over the past week.

The way I understand it is this: It’s normal procedure for an incoming president to appoint a new slate of federal attorneys (which is slightly different from firing them.) The problem here is that Gonzales et al were leaning on Republican prosecutors to give them the political outcomes they desired, and then firing them if they didn’t play ball. That’s a different beast than just the usual set of new appointments.
