By way of A Small Victory, test your geography with this interactive map of the Middle East. I have to admit, the first time around I did pretty poorly, particularly in Central Africa and the former Soviet Union.

This was pretty cool! Name that Stan! When did Mali become part of the Middle East?
American historians aren’t expected to know geography…or languages…or the history of regions outside the great 48, so no worries, Murph! Once again, your 350 are more important than my 1000.

Yep. Get used to it.
Note that neither Murphy nor Governale will fess up. Jason says “pretty cool”, Kevin says “pretty poorly” — I missed two, putting Mauritania where the Western Sahara apparently is, and Niger where Mali apparently is. Dating a girl who’s part Uzbek helped me with the Stans.
No one said that Western North Africa was a piece of cake. I made similar mistakes with Mali and Mauritania (partly because of where they were in antiquity), and the Afro-Centric Ruffini should be able to breeze through the N. African map with NO MISTAKES!
I didn’t know Mali or Mauritania either, and was basically guessing on all Stans except Turkmenistan and Pakistan. Also confused Chad, Niger, and the Sudan, as well as Yeman and Oman. What can I say? I never took geography.
