Clipped Left Wing.

Bloggers of the Left, Unite! (Via LinkMachineGo.) As Lake Effect has noted before, I’m positive Lefty bloggers aren’t the rare breed the author thinks they are – a quick browsing through the portal will lead you to dozens of well-written progressive and liberal blogs (Ethel the Blog, Tomb of Horrors and Monkeyfist, for example, to name three off the top of my head.) In fact, I’d hazard to say that the majority of blogs are probably of a lefty bent. Unfortunately for balanced discourse, though, Sullivan and Reynolds both seem to have captivated huge (by blog-standard) audiences almost right from the start. I’d be lying if I didn’t find their immediate popularity considerably annoying, but oh well…that’s just sour grapes. After several years of writing this blog, I’ve found its best not to dwell on the (lack of) readership…Therein lies madness.

  1. I used to think most political blogs were written from a lefty’s perspective, but since I started playing with Blogger’s random blog script I am less sure. In fact, it seems to me that most folks identify themselves as “conservative” or “libertarian.” IMHO, the latter is made up of Republican conservatives who don’t like the religious right-wing of their party and therefore call themselves libertarian, when in fact, they are still rabid Republicans 🙂

Seems these comments strip HTML code. 🙂

  2. Whatever I came across the site by accident while looking for info on the book “The Ghost in the Machine” by Koestler and since I was a democrat (actually Nader ’00, and I’m from Florida :P) so I kinda like what I read and thats all. When Im at work and not studying there I check it out its good entertainment. p.s. how is the movie trials of henry kissinger? Im a big fan (realpolitik owns) so was the case convincing? Late

  3. Well, I’m always thankful for your excellent links and left-of-center commentary. I’ll take Ghost over Andrew Sullivan any day of the week!

  4. I’ve always enjoyed Ghostinthemachine’s old-fashioned populist slant — but I have to say that the vast majority of lefty blogs just aren’t that much fun to read. IMHO they tend toward a kind of moist-eyed hand-wringing — the whole “What if there’s a humanitarian disaster in Afghanistan, and aren’t I brave for supporting Bill Maher’s right to speak, and we all know Bush is a stupid fratboy” line that is well-intentioned but utterly snoozeworthy. Also, a surprising number of the popular lefty blogs are written pseudonymously, which makes it kind of tough to respect the writers or even identify with them — they aren’t risking anything, so who cares?

My fave lefty blogger (present company excepted, of course) is Maxspeak.org. He’s excruciatingly well-informed, but not afraid to occasionally take a big old out-from-left-field swing. He doesn’t give me that dozy juiceless feeling that so many left-wing bloggers do.

  5. Thanks all for the kind words. As for Kissinger, the film make a pretty compelling case, even if some of it doesn’t hold up to further research.

  6. The following revealing item on Henry Kissinger is extracted from an article from the ‘New World Order Intelligence Update’ [http://www.nwointelligence.com/NEWWORLD.HTM]:

‘And, fellow-Canadians, as a faint echo of the freedoms we have now lost in this once great Dominion, here’s a robust exercise of free speech, fresh from the Mother Country, which is now impossible to imagine in modern Canada!

[Henry Kissinger walks out on Paxman radio program in the U.K. after being asked, among other things, if he felt “like a fraud.” Exchange below, as reported by THE GUARDIAN, 29th June, 1999]

Jeremy Paxman: “It’s been 17 years since the last volume of your memoirs. You said you wanted to let the dust settle but [didn’t you] need the distance in order to rewrite history?”

Dr Kissinger: “No I based these memoirs on documents which were as valid then as they are now.”

Paxman: [describes Kissinger’s claim that he ended the cold war as “farfetched”] “What bothers a lot of people is you seem to ignore the human rights of people within regimes with which you’re trying to establish a balance of power.”

    Kissinger: “That’s not correct either.”

Paxman: question about supporting General Pinochet and undermining President Allende in Chile.

Kissinger: “We did not support Pinochet. In what way did we support Pinochet?”

Paxman: “You supported the military regime.”

Kissinger: “After the coup we preferred Pinochet to Allende.”

Paxman: “It doesn’t stop there… You’re on record justifying the [behaviour of the] Chinese government in Tiananmen Square.”

Kissinger:… “I have never supported what the Chinese did in Tiananmen Square.”

Paxman: “Did you feel a fraud for accepting the Nobel Prize [for the Indo-China agreement]?”

Kissinger: “I wonder what you do when you do a hostile interview?”

Paxman: [accuses Kissinger of a “wilful misreading of history”]

Kissinger: “It may be a misreading but it wasn’t wilful.”

Paxman: question about the “hundreds of thousands of people killed in the bombing of Cambodia”.

Kissinger: “That’s absolutely untrue. We have no evidence that hundreds of thousands of people were killed… I think this is an absolute outrage, it’s nonsense.”

Paxman: “You don’t deny [the bombing of Cambodia] was secret though?… This was a secret operation against a neutral country…”

Kissinger: “Come on now, Mr Paxman, this was 15 years ago, and you at least have the ability to educate yourself about a lie on your own programme… ”

    Paxman: “What’s factually inaccurate?”

Kissinger: “… That’s outrageous… ” [Kissinger abruptly leaves: Paxman calls out, “‘Bye, Dr. Kissinger”!]’
