The forthcoming Nolan Batman adds Morgan Freeman to the mix as “Lucius Fox, a respected businessman and the CEO of billionaire Bruce Wayne’s mega-conglom, based in Gotham City.” (If this is some character from the comics, I’ve never heard of him.) Also, Neeson is confirmed as Ras Al Ghul, meaning the only high-profile character left is Commissioner Gordon (which Chris Cooper, sadly, already turned down.)

Kevin, I’m thinking that you don’t have any kids.
I’m only saying that because I do, and they love watching Batman cartoons, which also means that I get to watch them myself. I’m talking about the recent ones, well, as of the last ten years or so. It’s been running pretty regularly since.
Lucius has been a recurring character on the first series. I think it was just called the animated series. I don’t know how many seasons there were, but they’ve added Robin and Batgirl over time. I think recently they upgraded Dick Grayson to Nightwing, but I might be confusing myself. Lately my boys have been watching the Elseworld-like Batman Beyond, so I’ve sort of been out of touch with the original series.
I used to collect the comics pretty regularly and don’t remember seeing Lucius in them either, but on the show he seemed to be a foil for Bruce’s Lassaiz-faire management style.
I’m pretty sure they brought Lucius into the comics post-animated series, too, though I might be wrong.
Dang, I guess I’m showing my old-school tendencies. The only Batman comics I’ve picked up in a decade were DK2 and some of the recent ten-parter.
Lucius Fox predates the animated series. In the 80s
Wayne closed the mansion and moved into a penthouse
in Gotham City. That’s when they brought in Fox. He
was the guy who made the day to day decisions that
his “playboy” boss was too zoned out to handle. Eventually Wayne went back to the mansion and fox faded into the background
I’m late to the party, but alChandler’s on the money. Somebody in DC’s editorial department finally realized that somebody had to run the ship while Wayne was chasing skirts. He still turns up from time to time, from what I hear.
Fox was also interesting because he was a black head of a major corporation. It’s a bit strange that he’s going to be in the movie, but it sounds like there are going to be a lot of small roles.
Neeson isn’t playing Ra’s Al Ghul, He is playing Henri Ducard. Ken Watanabe is playing Ra’s Al Ghul.
