As the article suggests, this may be good news for the Dems, as it seems unlikely that Dubya will be able force through two hard-core right-wingers in a row, even with Fred Thompson at the helm…or at least one hopes. Update: The terrain shifts for twin appointments.

my guess is that two help him… he can appoint a really conservative guy, and a really, really conservative guy that makes the first one seem like Frantz Fanon by comparison. (actually, i was thinking that he would basically appoint a smart super-right-winger as the first one, who gets through on the qualifications, like Michael McConnell, and then a total political hack on the second one after all the lefty groups blow their money in vain.)
