Breaking a few weeks ago now, AICN claims to have the skinny on the initial casting of Zach Snyder’s version of Watchmen. Rumored as the Nite-Owl, Patrick Wilson of The Alamo and Little Children. (He’s a bit buff for the role, frankly. I’d expected someone a little more gone to seed, like John Cusack or even Tom Hulce.) As Doctor Manhattan, Neo himself, Keanu Reeves. (Um, ok. I don’t really see that working. Then again, I don’t really see anyone else working either, this side of Gollum-style CGI) And, as Ozymandias, much-avowed Watchmen fan Jude Law. (That’s pretty good, although somebody like Aaron Eckhart would be even better.) That’s it so far, other than that Snyder — who won’t deny these casting rumors — has promised he’d get Gerard Butler of 300 in there somewhere. (Why bother? I don’t remember any character who’s supposed to YELL…ALL…THE…TIME.) At any rate, that means Simon Pegg as Rorschach is still a possibility, if one that is very, very remote.

Uh, in the movie 300 Gerry was supposed to YELL ALL THE TIME. If he wasn’t, don’t you think Zach would have told him to stop? Do you keep your brain in all the time?
No, I had to take it out for most of the run of 300, actually.
Butler can do sooooo much more than yell. He really is a very good actor. That said, which part do you see Zack giving him? I figure it would be the comedian, those parts wouldn’t take too long to film. If it were like fantasy football and you could make up a cast and crew instead of a team, what would be your ideal cast? That includes screenwriter, director or anything else that you have an opinon on.
Yeah, Gerard Butler as The Comedian makes the most sense…good call, Candide.
Of the directors associated with The Watchmen so far, Paul Greengrass (Bloody Sunday, Bournes II and III, United 93) seems like the most interesting choice. Terry Gilliam and Darren Aronofsky, both attached at one point, would be ok too, but their visions are too singular, I fear. The result would be more a Gilliam or Aronofsky film than The Watchmen as it was intended.
As for casting, I already mentioned Cusack as Nite-Owl, Eckhart as Ozymandias (or, failing that, Capt. Metropolis — he’s got the chin for it), and someone like Pegg as Rorschach. I don’t see anything really working for Dr. Manhattan (Daniel Craig in blue paint?), so he’d have to be CGI’ed. Holly Hunter for the Silk Spectre?
