The LotR team — PJ, Fran, and Phillipa — have announced their first post-Kong project and, as rumored, it’ll be The Lovely Bones. Judging a book by its cover blurb, the story — about a murdered 14-year old girl watching her killer from Heaven — sounds Oprah-esque and precious to me (and not in the Gollum sense.) But then again, I haven’t read it. If nothing else, the project does seem ripe for some Heavenly Creatures-like FX throughout.

I loved the book, but I was lucky enough to read it before it received too much hype. It’s more of a character study of the family, although the unique point-of-view is compelling.
With the right cast (and will they have any problems lining up a cast?), the picture could be fantastic.
I read it a few years ago on Bill’s recommendation. I thought the first six or so chapters were fantastic, really gripping, and then the book got increasingly frustrating and treacly and boring as it went on. I’m wondering that attracted them to it. I really, really hope they don’t go in some “What Dreams May Come” direction with the notion of creating one’s own idea of heaven…
