A Stocking full of Trailers.

Among the many Christmas trailers hitting the net today:

  • Jaden Smith (i.e. baby Will) waxes on, waxes off, and otherwise sweeps the leg at the behest of Jackie Chan in the trailer for the remake of The Karate Kid, also with Taraji P. Henson. Sigh…this makes me feel old.
  • Secret Agent Tom Cruise aims to protect Cameron Diaz for some reason or another in the new trailer for Knight & Day, also with Peter Sarsgaard, Viola Davis, Oliver Martinez, Paul Dano, and Maggie Grace. Can’t say I’m feeling it.
  • Most intriguingly, Leonardo di Caprio folds space and discourses on memes — in French! — in the foreign-language trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception, also with Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine and Dileep Rao. Looks very Dark Knight-ish in its aesthetic…This could be the movie of the summer.
  • And if none of these float your boat, Harry at AICN has an overview of the garbage-y trailers out today, including Sex and the City 2, Furry Vengeance, Cats and Dogs 2, The Back-Up Plan, and Marmaduke. View at your own risk — These are NSFW, or anywhere else in God’s Creation, for that matter.

    King (of the World) and Avatar.

    “The Banshees and the other creatures are going to be about 90% or 95% animated. And with the humanoids hopefully we’re going to be coming down to 95% capture with the exception of ears and like I said clothing and hair and stuff like that.” I’m behind on this one — Sorry, I’ve been saving up links to space out the flurry of movie reviews, and then overestimating how much I can actually get written on a given day — but James Cameron has announced more details about Avatar (not to be confused with M. Night Shyamalan’s Avatar, which I couldn’t case less about) and granted AICN’s Harry Knowles an extended interview on the performance-capture project. Set for a 2009 release, the film will “star” Sam Worthington (recently in the Aussie Macbeth update) and Zoe Saldana (late of Pirates of the Caribbean II.)

    More James Cameron news: Harry of AICN has a wide-ranging conversation with the director which, if you can get past the usual Knowlesisms, reveals that Project 880 is in fact Avatar, and that Cameron has been working with NASA on a “Live Video Stereo Motion Image” (3-D) camera for the next Mars Rover.

    The new trailer for V for Vendetta is now online. This premiered at BNAT 7 last week and got universally great reviews from the AICN fanboys, most of whom know their Moore…but, frankly, I’m not really feeling the “Matrix with knives” angle of this trailer, and John Hurt seems like he’s overdoing it.

    While it was pretty clear going in that the Blade trilogy had already peaked in the first five minutes of the first film, when Wesley Snipes busts up Traci Lords’ vampire rave to New Order’s infectious Pump Panel remix of “Confusion,” I still had high hopes that Blade: Trinity would live up to the “quality popcorn flick” standard of the first two. Alas, the Daywalker’s third installment is a bit of a mess. It’s got a few reasonably numbing wire-fu action sequences, sure, but it’s missing that certain je-ne-sais-quoi that made the first two outings such fun. The result is…well, kinda flat.

    Surprisingly, given that this is the third Blade written by first-time director David Goyer (who’s also scribed next summer’s Batman Begins), the biggest problem here is the writing. For one, there’s holes in the plot you could drive a Batmobile through. (If the vampires can capture Blade so easily, what’d they need Dracula for? How did Drake know when the good guys would hit the psychiatrists’ office?) Moreover, entire setpieces are lifted straight out of other, better films. (For example, the aforementioned psychiatrist, stolen right out of The Terminator, or the bloodbank and (ugh) baby scenes, both jacked from the original Blade.) And worst of all is the dialogue. Ryan Reynold’s character, Hannibal King, not only has to spit out a slew of stale-on-arrival wisecracks in every scene, he also appears to have learned English from reading AICN talkbacks.

    In fact, that may be the most annoying thing about Blade: Trinity — Like no movie since Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, it appears conceived, written, and marketed to appeal solely to Harry Knowles’ disgruntled army of foul-mouthed, oversexed, ADD-afflicted teenagers, right down to the Patton Oswalt cameo and the gratuitous Jessica Biel shower scene. For what it’s worth, though, Biel and Reynolds are troopers about it all, while Blade himself just seems bored at this point. (By the way, I’m a happy member of iPod Nation, but Biel’s iPodatry here was, frankly, embarrassing.) Casting Parker Posey as evil vamp Danica Talos probably seemed like a good idea (and a nod to the NYC uberyuppie milieu of Stephen “Deacon Frost” Dorff in the first film)…but she’s got nothing to work with, except some terrible repartee with Reynolds. And I don’t know what it is about Vampire Big Bads, but the guy who plays Eurotrash Dracula has got to be the worst actor I’ve seen in a major movie since Shane Brolly in Underworld. As the Seattle Post-Intelligencer put it (birddogged by my bro), he had “all the dark charisma and burning threat of a baked potato.” In sum, Blades 1 & 2 are both surprisingly enjoyable, but this time they miffed it.

    “The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre.”

    We’ve heard from the pope (sort of) (“It is as it was?” Jesus was a tall blue-eyed white guy?), we’ve heard from Harry Knowles, but now the “real” reviews of The Passion (which I’ll probably see this weekend) are coming in fast, and so far they all say the same thing: Too much violence and gore, too little charity and grace. David Edelstein sums up the emerging consensus view: “This is a two-hour-and-six-minute snuff movie — The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre — that thinks it’s an act of faith.” And even Roger Ebert, an admirer of the film (and one whom I rarely agree with these days), confesses: “This is the most violent film I have ever seen.” Hoo boy. I was afraid of that. Beware the packs of bloodthirsty bible-thumpers on your way out, y’all.

    From fighting the undead to praising the risen-again, the new trailer for Mel’s Passion (referred to by the ever-emphatic Harry Knowles as a “dead language gore film about one of the greatest stories ever told”) is now online. Looks like they’ve decided to go the subtitle route.

    The Daily Mail: “How about amazing, stupendous, jawdropping and overwhelming? For this is wonderfully imaginative cinema on the grandest possible scale…There are sights here unparalleled in cinema…For its scale, imagination and passion, this is, without doubt, the greatest cinematic trilogy ever.” Financial Times: “This concluding film may be the greatest fantasy- adventure epic ever made. It is almost certainly the most spectacular.Harry at AICN: “This is frankly one of the greatest films ever made…for me, it is without equal or parallel. It does not diminish the others to any degree, it is just what it is — perfect. Like when Lean did BRIDGE OF THE RIVER KWAI, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and DR ZHIVAGO — there was just fate leaning over the shoulder and perfection was achieved.” Wow, after all that superlative madness (which, ok, we expected from Harry), how bout a new commercial? Beware: this one’s a money-shot trailer…there’s a very good chance you might not want to see some of this stuff until after Tuesday. Then again, maybe you do…
