Greetings from NYC, where Berk and I returned yesterday evening. I’ve been spending today running errands and generally cleaning up the apartment environs for 2006, but I expect updates should return to normal around here shortly.

Happy 2006, y’all. Today’s a travel day for me (from San Diego back to Norfolk), so updates will be sparse. That being said, amid the grim news in West Virginia, I’d be remiss if I didn’t post this glint of light for the new year: As rumored, the Feds have flipped Jack Abramoff, meaning trouble ahead for the DeLay-driven GOP corruption machine. While the inquiry into Boss DeLay, who just picked up a Dem opponent in the 2006 midterms, “could take up to a year and require the cooperation of other witnesses before issues are resolved,” it seems prosecutors will move more quickly against DeLay deputy and GOP official Bob Ney, who corresponds to a “Representative #1” referred to in the plea agreement. Let’s get this show started!
When I was one-and-thirty.
And oh, ’tis true, ‘tis true. Today, I’m 31.
Deck the Halls.
A happy (belated) holidays to you and yours from the compound in Norfolk, VA, where we’ve all been engaged in the usual Murphy christmas routine: gift-swapping, atlatl-tossing, and myriad other games of skill and chance. Updates should resume around here shortly, particularly since, among other things, Santa has kindly brought Berk and I a swanky new Gateway MX7515 notebook! (In fact, this is my first wireless post, so GitM has now officially joined the Wi-Fi era…booyah.)
Six in the City.
My little green friend.
“You must feel the Force around you, here; between you, me, the treat, the squirrel, everywhere!…yes, even between the land and the frisbee.” Ok, I know this is wrong on a lot of levels, and I’ve even gone on record (4/9) as being opposed to dressing up animals like Star Wars characters in the past. (Caped crusaders, tho’, are another matter.) Nevertheless, my sister‘s boyfriend Ethan saw this particular outfit and thought it screamed Berkeley, and, well, he does look ready to lay a Jedi-by-way-of-Wookie smackdown, doesn’t he? At any rate, happy halloween out there, y’all, and be safe.
Update: In barely related news, Yoda channels Honey Daniels.
In My Secret Life.
By the way, since people often ask me about it, and since I’ve been working on grant writing of late anyway, I’ve written up and html’ized a brief executive summary of my dissertation project. As always, subject to change…particularly the title. (Left-of-the-Colon probably isn’t the best place for a The The pun.)
With God on their side.
Personal plug: Bill Press’ How the Republicans Stole Christmas, which I worked on earlier this year, was released today. As I noted last April, its basic thesis is “The Religious Right are neither religious nor right” (discuss amongst yourselves), and it aims to put the lie to the fundies’ constant invocations of Jesus to justify their greed, intolerance, and hypocrisy. (And, along with being a long-time Dem campaign manager and pundit, Press also spent a decade in the seminary, so he knows of what he speaks.) Now, as they say, in bookstores everywhere.
To the Five Boroughs.
Hey y’all. After a good deal of traveling (and side-stepping around Katrina), I’m back in Chesapeake, VA, and have broken Berkeley out of the canine correctional facility he was residing at during our Maui sojourn. Later in the week (and just like Tom Thumb’s Blues), I’ll be heading back up to NYC to begin Year 5 at Hogwarts, or Columbia, as it were.(I’ll post Hawaii pics at Flickr once I return to Gotham.)
My ghost likes to travel.
Aloha and mahalo from lovely, splendiferous Maui, where — textbook work complete — I’ll be spending the next few weeks swimming, snorkeling, hiking, recharging, and reading the occasional tome on New Era progressivism. What with the sun, sand, and sea, I expect the lax updating schedule of the past few weeks will continue for the duration…Sorry about that. I’ll make it up come September.
